What sounds interesting about this project?

The main procedure about how miscellaneous materials such as petrol and kerosene are made pure via distillation. It will definitely be intriguing, as the process doesn’t seem to be straightforward and easy to conclude how it is done using the naked eye

What do you think you can learn from this project?

How distillation is conducted and the formulae required to conduct the project. I believe that these items of research can eventually be used for future purposes such as possible study into the subject when I am older.

Any immediate questions regarding the project?

Not at the moment. Perhaps in the future.


First Day (26 May, Tuesday)

What did you do today?

We poured a mixture of ethanol and water into a distillation column in order to separate the two substances. 

What did you learn today?

Distillation is an important but long process required for our daily products we use.

How do you feel about today’s activities?

The project has helped me to realise how complex the process of distillation is. The knowledge from this can be easily used in the future if a course in chemical engineering is taken.

Today was admittedly quite a boring one.



Second Day (27 May, Wednesday)

What did you do today?

We calculated the mol fractions in the substance mixture in order to find the respective concentrations of the mixed liquids. We also did up a presentation that was judged.

What did you learn today?
The calculation of mol fractions is a very difficult process that requires the use of external third party programs like Microsoft Excel.
How do you feel about today’s activities?
Well, it honestly didn't really change for me.
